Five Ways to Summer Fun in Farmville

The transition from school to summer has a familiar refrain, “Mom, I’m bored; there’s nothing to do!” Don’t worry, Mom — Farmville has you covered. There’s an activity to suit every age and inclination. Read on to make your own summer plan for fun in Farmville.

1.Golf, swim and partyFarmville’s Golf Course, located at 36 Wedgewood Drive near the Farmville Regional Airport, is a one-stop place for all kinds of summer fun.
Golf: If golf’s your game, there’s a professional nine-hole par-72 course ready and waiting for every skill level.
Swim: Keep your cool after school lets out. Centered in the golf course, a junior Olympic-sized pool and fenced-in kiddie pool set the scene for summer fun. Memberships are available, or you can pay a one-visit fee of $5.
Party: For all those special summer celebrations  — weddings, reunions or birthday events — the Golf Course Banquet Room offers elegance close to home at an affordable price.


2. Jam with the JayceesFirst Fridays in Farmville: There’s nothing like a concert by the river to set the tone for a summer weekend. Bring your blankets and chairs to Riverside Park every first Friday at 5:30 p.m. from June through September and enjoy live music, games and family-style entertainment.

3. Veg out at the Farmers Market
Farmville’s Community Marketplace: Located at 213 North St., this local farmers market is the place to be on Saturday mornings. From mid-April through November, it’s a one-stop market for the best in locally grown fruits and veggies, quality meats, eggs, baked goods and homemade crafts. Local bands often visit the market to offer homegrown entertainment.


4. Celebrate a Farmville 4th
Farmville’s Independence Day Celebration: Get ready to show your patriotic side at the Farmville Airport on July 3rd. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.; admission is $5 a car. Bounce houses and other activities will keep the kids jumping. Pick your favorite foods from a variety of vendors and get ready to enjoy the show with Moose Trap on the stage a 6 p.m., TFC Band from 8:15-9:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. TFC Band will take to the stage again from 10-10:30 p.m. to wrap up the evening.


5. Get competitiveIf you feel the need for speed, now’s the time to put on your running shoes and tune up that bike.
High Bridge Trail Roubaix Time Trial is a cycling event on the High Bridge Trail held on July 23. The race is open to cyclists of all skill levels, ages 7 and up.
High Bridge Half Marathon & 5K: Take your pick in this Sept. 9 run/run walk event on the High Bridge Trail. The Half Marathon kicks off at 7:30 a.m., and the 5K begins at 8 a.m. You’ll feel like a pro when you run past the cheer groups stationed along the route!
